In Dota 2, players can enter into ranked matchmaking. This is hugely important for player development. It allows new players to get into the game and learn by playing against comparatively easier opposition. At the same time, better players can refine their skills against top competitors. In order to determine who gets to play with whom, the game uses a ranking system. Dota 2 ranks are determined by a mechanism called MMR. In that sense, it works similarly to the ELO rating system, where winning matches will increase your rating value and losing will result in a decrease. However, MMR is not the only factor in matching up pairing up players for matchmaking. The experience of the players and other game metrics, such as gold difference, are applied.

Valve has changed the Dota 2 ranked role matchmaking system once again. The latest update removed separate core and support ranks and merged them back into a single rank. It sounds like the good old days. But they also added something new. The matchmaking system will use your full MMR when a player queues for their best roles. But when they queue for weaker ones, the matchmaking system will place them into lower MMR matches.
For example, a player who predominately plays support roles might have an Ancient III badge.

This ostensibly makes it difficult for skilled players to “climb” up the matchmaking ranking and out of Elo hell , due to the difficulty of consistently winning games under these conditions. Its existence in various games has been debated, and some game developers have called it an illusion caused by cognitive bias. The term was coined based on the Elo rating system designed by Arpad Elo , which was initially used for chess games but began to be used in video games as well. Elo rankings have also been “abused” by players who create parties of their friends in order to “escape” Elo hell.
Elo hell has also been noted as existing outside of video games, such as in the matchmaking app Tinder , which also uses a variant of the Elo rating system. Supposing that one is in Elo hell has been known to cause frustration and video game rage.

Dota 2 Gets Big Experimental Changes to Ranked Matchmaking
Valve has been overhauling a lot of things about Dota 2 in recent weeks due to a mix of server issues and preparation for the next season of ranked matches. But now, the full list of changes is out and many of them are going to make a huge impact on the quality of games. The biggest changes will impact the way each match will be affected by roles and the actions Valve is taking to stop the rampant use of smurf accounts within its game.
The first big change is Valve acknowledging how messy matchmaking has become because of players drafting heroes in bad roles. Match quality takes a significant dip if one player decides to pick a hero more suited for support in an offlane position.
We understand that some players, especially at the high end, have experienced a significant drop in matchmaking quality as a result of our recent iterations. We are committed to making matchmaking as good as it can be. For any party that includes an Immortal player, every player in that party will be considered the same rank as the highest player in that party. We think this trade-off is worthwhile at this high level, however, because matches are unlikely to be of high quality anyways with extremely disparate skill levels within a party given the shallow pool available.
Such disparity has often made the games less fun for most players involved. We expect that this will have the net effect of reducing the number of party games at the highest skill levels by some amount, but compared to how infrequent high-MMR party games were in the past, the number of party games should still be higher than the historical average. For any five-player party, they will now only be matched against other five-player parties, regardless of any other matchmaking consideration.
We are unsure if an absolute requirement like this will result in net higher quality matchmaking due to the more limited opponent spectrum available in that case, but we know this is an aspect the community talks about often and we are going to do our best to work within those constraints. Similarly, any solo player will now only ever be considered for matches against at most one party of two.
This will be a hard requirement for the matchmaker instead of a situational consideration. We will be monitoring the system after release to make sure the fixes have the intended effect. It is possible that there will be more issues to work out, so if you notice anything too far off please let us know. While this gave some loose sense of progression, it made comprehension of what medals represent more difficult.
Earlier today, Valve released a small patch which saw the addition of stats for Neutral items. A welcome quality of life chance, but then players started reporting a weird bug – they automatically gained or lost thousands of MMR points. From what we can tell, players who finished the match when Dota 2 coordinator was offline or right after the patch was released, are the ones who are primarily affected by this issue.
DOTA is an amazing game and has an amazing community! I cannot imagine my life without it. Now, you would probably argue that if you are good you will be noticed anyway which is true, but what about those players who understood, loved and played the game well, but their MMR dictated what tag they were given and hence they eventually quit.
For example, Game 1: Player Performance — Great Now, this could go in any number of ways depending on individual performance, teammates, enemies, server connection, etc. You could perform outstandingly but still lose cause maybe somebody lost connection or maybe someone fed in your team. On the flip side, you could perform terribly and yet win cause of the same reasons on the enemy team.
We tend to ignore this because we enjoy the flip side more! We get frustrated when we play well and still lose, BUT we never complain when we win even though we perform miserably in certain games. MMR should be hero-specific, where your individual performance is graded rather than the overall outcome. To avoid abuse of this method, all areas of the performance metric should be graded.
